A blazon is an identifying design awarded to an individual in recognition of some noteworthy deed,in mediaeval times this would most likely be for outstanding bravery in battle. A modern equivalent might be a knighthood. The blazon would be painted on the shield of the warrior, and along with his sword, helm and armour would make up his "coat of arms". The family and fighting men of the warriors clan would also wear the design in leather or cloth over a mail shirt in battle, this serving as a recognisable uniform even when damaged or soiled with blood and dirt.
As such, blazons were simple and bold, often a single colour with stripe or cross. As more blazons were awarded down the years, the designs became more intricate with added colours and designs which told the nature of the award and often the character of the bestowed. Over time many established blazons have been modified by descendents to show offshoot regional clans and later awards which complicate the original design and produce a true work of art in itself. Should two families marry, the shield may be divided to show both blazons side by side. It is important to select the correct blazon for your shield of valour, and to advise us when placing your order of any modifications you may require. You are also permitted to design your own blazon, using established heraldic software to create a truly unique artwork.
