About Us

Kand Heraldic Craft was formed in 2006 to fill a need in the heraldic art market, namely a recognisable life size coat of arms. Whilst various small trophy's have been mass produced overseas for some time, they have proved to be little more than curio's which sit on a shelf and gather dust. The blazon is often indistinct and hidden amongst curly painted details which add to the cost but do not proclaim the actual feature, which is the name and design of the blazon.

We made our first shield of valor by hand, using hand and power tools to prove the design was sound, the result exceeded our expectations despite having homemade features such as poor lacquer finish and routing errors. We new from the reaction of family and fellow tradespeople we had a viable business. From the start it was decided we would be using actual swords, if not true weapons then at least a full size replica and that the customer would have the final say on which swords, with regard to cost, style, region and period.

We felt that the blazon should be the dominating feature as was traditional, and that the name should complement rather than overshadow the blazon. The text on the name should reflect the period and ethnicity of the name, and again the customer should decide the detail. We wanted the paintwork to be basic and bold as was traditional when the blazon was the family or clan identifier. It should be recognisable in battle or from a distance and would be worn with pride by members of the family or clan at ceremony.

Because of the many different skills involved in building a shield of velour, it was necessary to subcontract trades to maintain the highest standard with final assembly done by us including design, ordering, quality control and packaging. We intend your shield of valor to last for many years, and anticipate it being handed down through generations for the enjoyment of family in years to come.
